Moria after the fire
The burnt down refugee camp in Moria on the Greek island of Lesvos: In September 2020
In between the ashes I saw burnt and trampled rats and as the night came, I saw more and more alive one's creeping out from underneath the ruins, and I concluded that even while people still were living here, the place must have been full of rats.
Infrastructure in the new camp in Kara Tepe, on a former military base, are sparse and the the view with its eyepiercing blue sea can't deceive anyone on the ground of the harsh realities.
"Black Hill"
That's the original meaning of the Turkish stemming location name Kara Tepe.
The tents are scorchingly hot during the day and freezing cold during the night as they don't really provide enough shelter from the cold wind coming from the sea.
There is barely any running water and no possibility to wash yourself except for the salty sea itself and the porta potties aren't emptied in time, which leads the residents to relieve themselves in the surrounding hills...
Trash and feces are everywhere and this is only after a couple weeks of building the new camp up.
